With the new season of the Indian Super League getting underway in less than 4 days now, football season in India has returned. The excitement for the third season of ISL is building day by day now! The first two seasons were a huge success in almost every aspect, be it transforming couch potatoes to stadium goers or providing a huge platform for Indian footballers or legendary footballers playing on Indian soil.

For those who have not followed the league until now, here are the few things they need to know about the league before the football action begins in the sub-continent.

1. What Exactly Is ISL?
A joint venture by IMG-Reliance, Indian Super League (ISL) is an initiative to get some quality Football exposure to our local players, whilst bringing a number of well-known international football stars to play in India. Modelled around the popular cricketing league, IPL, ISL is one of the most popular and successful Football leagues of our country.

2. The Teams
Like the previous two seasons, this season will also see 8 teams/franchises, representing 8 Indian cities, competing against each other. The teams are:

1. Atletico De Kolkata
2. Chennaiyin FC
3. Delhi Dynamos FC
4. FC Goa
5. FC Pune City
6. Kerala Blasters FC
7. Mumbai City FC
8. Northeast United FC

3. Format of the League
The Indian Super League will be played in a format similar to its cricket counterpart league, IPL. A total of 61 games will be played across 79 days in a home-away league format followed by two-legged semi-finals and the final. Each team will play two matches with each other, one at home and one away. Each squad will have a Marquee player and at least 8 foreign players. The remaining will be Indian players.

4. How Will the League Help Indian Football?
ISL provides a platform where for the first time in the history of Indian Football, globally renowned football players play alongside the best Indian Footballers. This is a great attempt by the founders to elevate Indian Football to an International level. As India is all set to host the U-17 Football World Cup next year, ISL will boost the prospects of the Sport in our country, thereby attracting more sponsors, and eventually help raising the fortunes of Football in India!

The third edition of ISL kicks off in Guwahati on 1 st of October when NorthEast United FC take on the Kerala Blasters in the inaugural match!
