D. R. Nanayakkara was a popular film actor of Sri Lankan origin, most prominent to play villainous and comedic characters. After completing his education from St. Matthews College, Dematagoda, he actively participated in theater plays, when he was noticed by playwright Sirisena Wimalaweera, who included him in his troupe. Nanayakkara stepped into the film industry when he starred in Amma (1949), for which he also recorded two songs, proving his talent as a playback singer. One of the most acclaimed roles of his career was that of Sooty in the 1956 film Rekava. He further gained popularity for his villainous roles in the movies Kurulu Bedda (1961), Sikuru Tharuwa (1966) and Binaramali (1969), whereas Bicycle Hora (1968) won him the Sarasaviya Award for Best Actor. His other popular films include Kathuru Muwath, Kapatikama, Lasanda and Nedeyo.
