Meghna Gulzar is an Indian director who works in the Hindi film industry. She is the only daughter of legendary lyricist, novelist and director Gulzar and actress Rakhee. Meghna made her directorial debut with the 2002 movie, Filhaal. She has also written a book about her father titled 'Because he is...' and worked as a freelance journalist before venturing into filmmaking. In 2015, she directed the movie Talwar, based on the 2008 Noida Double Murder Case.
EARLY LIFE
Meghna Gulzar was born to Gulzar and Rakhee on 13th December, 1973. She completed her graduation in sociology from St.Xavier's college in Mumbai. The actress undertook a short filmmaking course from the Tisch School of Arts in New York.
PERSONAL LIFE
She is married to businessman Govind Sandhu who is the co-founder and CFO of Antworks Pte. Ltd. They have a son from their marriage named Samay.
MOVIE CAREER
Meghna started her filmmaking career as an assistant to director Saaed Mirza and later her father Gulzar in films Maachis (1996) and Hu Tu Tu (1999). She then started making documentaries for Doordarshan as well as music videos.
Meghna directed her first film Filhaal in 2002. Starring Sushmita Sena, Tabu and Sanjay Suri in the lead role, the movie explored the subject of surrogate mother. She couldn't really find success in her debut film as it recieved mixed reviews and no success at the box office. The subject of the film was appreciated, but the treatment was criticized.
Her next film Just Married (2007) also recieved the same feedback as her first. Although the film tackled a fresh subject, it received heavy criticism for the way it was portrayed on screen. The story of the film revolved around a couple who realise that they are incompatible for each other just after getting married. Esha Deol andFardeen Khan appeared in the lead roles in the film. Meghna next directed a short in the anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) titled Pooranmaasi for which she was finally praised for her directorial skills. The short film showacased a middle aged woman's repressed sexuality and starred Amrita Singh and Minnisha Lamba in the lead role.
Her 2015 film Talvar, based on the Arushi Talvar murder case, was her first critically acclaimed feature film. She directed a screenplay written by Vishal Bharadwaj which won him the National Award for Best Screenplay. The film also won the Filmfare Award for Best Editing. Irrfan KhanKonkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi played the lead roles in the film.
Meghna Gulzar's 2018 release is based on the book by Neelesh Mishra about the hijacking of the flight IC 814.
Her 2020 release includes Chhapaak, directed by Meghna Gulzar.
