Pooja Gauthami Umashankar, well known by the mononym Pooja, is an Indian-Sri Lankan actress, who is known for her work in the Sinhala, Tamil and Malayalam film industries. Having her roots in both India and Sri Lanka, she is well versed in Tamil, Sinhala, Kannada and English. Pooja made her acting debut in the Tamil movie Jay Jay (2003), starring alongside R. Madhavan and Priyanka Kothari. She went on to act in a slew of hit Tamil movies like Attagasam (2004), Ullam Ketkumae (2005) and Jithan (2005), before making her Sinhala debut with Anjalika (2006). Pooja was nominated for the Best Actress and Most Popular Actress Award at the Sarasaviya Film Awards. She is considered one of the prominent actresses in the Sinhala movie industry, with hits like Asai Man Piyabanna (2007), Suwanda Denuna Jeewithe (2010), Kusa Pabha (2012), Sarigama (2016) and Paththini (2016). Pooja has successfully juggled her career in the Sinhala and South Indian film industries. Her prominent movies down South include Pattiyal (2006), Oram Po (2007), Naan Kadavul (2009) and Vidiyum Munn (2013). She was nominated and has won several awards for her portrayal of a sex worker in the Tamil thriller Vidiyum Munn (2013). In 2014, Pooja was engaged to Sri Lankan Model Deepak Shanmuganathan in 2014. But due to personal reasons Pooja called it off. In 2016 she married Prashan David Vedhakan, a Sri Lankan businessman, in a low key ceremony.
