Having won the Presidential Award for Best Upcoming Actor for his performance in his debut movie Hiripoda Wassa in 2006. Before taking to acting, Ranawana participated in and won the Mr. Sri Lanka title, following which he represented Sri Lanka in the 2002 Manhunt International, where he ranked seventh. In 2003, he stood second runner-up in the Best Model of the World pageant that was held in Turkey. Soon after his debut, he became a household name and gained immense popularity among the masses. Mainly playing lead roles, the Sinhalese model-turned-actor featured in movies like Tharaka Mal, Asai Mang Piyabanna, Rosa Kale, Feel My Love, Dancing Star, and Suwanda Danuna Jeewithe. His work in the 2013 epic biographical drama Sri Siddhartha Gautama won him the Derana Film Award for Most Popular Actor. In 2016, the actor had movies like Sinhala comedy Ulath Ekai Pilath Ekai and the Tanasha Satharasinghe-starrer movie The Rainbow to his credit.
