Born to a Sri Lankan mother and Tamil father, Upeksha Swarnamali was born and raised in Kuwait where she studied at the Indian International School. A trained dancer, Upeksha returned to Sri Lanka after spending 20 years of her life in Kuwait. She then began modeling and featured in the music video of the song Chanchala, following which she bagged a role in the television series Paba, which won her immense praise and few accolades. However, after she was shown the door from the show, she ventured into politics in 2010 and became a member of the Sri Lankan Parliament in the 2010 General Elections but retired from active politics in 2015. Although she is mainly known for her work in television series, Upeksha has a number of movies to her credit as well. Making her debut, Upeksha was seen in the 2007 Sinhalese musical romantic Asai Man Piyabanna, where she was seen playing the second lead. Following her debut, she went on to appear in a series of movies such as Tikiri Suwanda, Uththara, and Bomba Saha Rosa, however, she only received recognition after her work in the 2016 movie Cinderella.
