Vijaya Kumaranatunga was a prominent film actor and playback singer who made his acting debut with Manamalayo (1967), but his first lead role came with Hanthane Kathawa in 1969. In a film career that lasted for almost two decades, Vijaya featured in several movies, the most remembered ones being Ponmani (1977), Ganga Addara (1980), Baddegama (1980), Maha Gedara (1980), Kristhu Charithaya (1990), an English movie The God King and a Tamil film Nanguran. As a playback singer, he has recorded more than 100 songs, and has also produced the film Waradata Danduwam. Vijaya was a successful politician too. He first joined the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), and then was part of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), for which he was the first national organizer. He was the founder of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP) that works towards peace in the Sri Lankan civil war.
