The lavish and critically-acclaimed musical tells the inspiring and uplifting true story of Maria- a free-spirited and fun-loving governess who changes the lives of the widowed Captian Von Trapp and his seven children. During her time with them, she re-introduces them to music, lessens the rigidity that the family has become accustomed to due to their strict upbringing and she helps them to truly embrace life and bond as a family. The story culminates with Maria joining the Von Trapp family and fleeing with them across the Austrian mountains as political tensions rise in the run-up to World War II. The original 1959 Broadway production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC won six Tony Awards, including the Best Musical Award and was Rodgers and Hammersteins biggest success. It also went on to be produced on the West End by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
